TV in China

You should expect to have access only to Chinese language TV programs. Very occasionally programs are broadcast in English or with English sub-titles.

The Chinese TV network has one English language channel - CCTV9 - which has a lot of very "vanilla" programming, suitable mostly for English students and the very bored foreigner. CCTV 9 is not always included in the usual program package, so don't expect it.

Follow up:

Generally a TV is provided as part of your accommodation furnishings. A DVD/VCD may also be provided. A DVD player is almost a necessity! They are cheaply and easily available from about 350RMB. DVD and VCD movies are also available everywhere for purchase or rental. The quality of these movies can be questionable but they are very cheap.

VCR's and video tapes are hard to find, in fact, almost non-existent.

Satellite TV service is pretty widely available, particularly in the well developed areas and foreigners can generally have the system installed without any difficulties. In Guangdong province the programming comes from the Philippines and there is a pretty good range of available channels. Cost is between 2-4000RMB for installation & 1 year subscription.

Cable TV is also available with English programing, but a little more difficult to find.

Many foreigners take advantage of the Internet in finding on-line TV sources and so a good computer, sound system and reliable, fast Internet is often a more advantageous entertainment option than TV.
