Some general but useful information about looking after your health in China.
Water: DO NOT drink tap water. Not even the locals drink it! Boil it first or buy bottled water. Delivery of bottled water is usually available for a very reasonable fee and some schools include this as one of the living conditions.
Toilets: Western style toilets are very rare. Get ready to use a "squatter" in most places outside your apartment. Generally toilet paper is not provided so make sure you carry your own or at least a packet of tissues! Toilet paper is not "flushed". It is usually discarded into a bin. Learn to plan your excursions carefully.
Facilities for washing your hands are usually available. A good idea is a small bottle of hand sanitizer. Keeping your hands clean is a pretty basic tip, but worth mentioning as you will be exposed to a whole host of new germs and bacteria that your body is not used to.
Hospitals & Medical Clinics: These are widely available in every community, though with varying degrees of acceptability by western standards. Large cities and regional centres often have "western" clinics available - at a premium cost.
International medical and evacuation insurance is highly recommended. It is also a good idea to get a thorough medical from your regular doctor before departure.
